The making of Baltic Snowshoes is all done by hand employing mostly traditional approaches of such production. The creation process consists of a sequence of steps each requiring specific tools and techniques and in about five days a pair of snowshoes can be made.
- First a log of white ash, harvested green, is split and shaped into regular snowshoe 'frame sticks'.
- These sticks are then steamed and bent to attain the desired form of the snowshoe. Once bent, the sticks are put together to create the snowshoe frame.
- In the next step the frame is oiled for protection against the elements.
- Last two remaining steps are - 'tying' of the snowshoe and - installing the bindings. While installing bindings may not require too much time, tying the web is the most time consuming process of building a snowshoe. Nonetheless, done well, it assure much more comfort and stability for the snowshoer. Especially when the path gets rough and all your attention is necessary for navigating through the snow.
- Once the snow shoe is ready the next step is... well, all the next steps are all up to you! Make them attentively, because a walk in nature has a lot to offer!
